The Government Affairs Committee continues working hard to advocate on your behalf.

 

HRRA to Host “Smart Growth/Land Use” coming up on August 26

 

2024 NAR Vice-President of Advocacy, Nate Johnson, will be at HRRA in person for this important class on land use and how REALTORS® can be an essential voice in building communities across the Southside. Class participants will receive 5 hours of CE credit. Registration coming soon!

 

HRRA Hosted “It Takes a Region: Southside City Update” on June 26.

 

Approximately 50 members were in attendance as city officials from Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach gave an update on their cities’ plan for growth and how zoning for housing is an essential element for success.

 

Norfolk

 

The City of Norfolk hosted its first “Unlocking Homeownership Wealth & Legacy Protection” program. Members of the Government Affairs Committee were there to emphasize why advocacy is important and why REALTORS® are the protectors of their private property rights.

 

Franklin

 

City of Franklin Now Accepting Applications for School Board Appointments

The City of Franklin has posted a Public Notice for appointments to the Franklin City School Board for Wards 2 and 5. Interested parties can visit the Boards & Commissions page on the City’s website, found here.

 

Suffolk

 

The city of Suffolk is working in collaboration with the City of Chesapeake to formalize the established working boundary line between the two

municipalities, in the vicinity of Pughsville. Click here to learn about the details and impact on residents.

 

Virginia Beach

 

Sign up now until September 5 to serve as an election official in Virginia Beach for the

The Legal Edge

 

New laws in the Commonwealth went into effect on July 1 for real estate and other laws affecting your clients. Among them are:

  • Stormwater Management Access Expanded: Localities operating a storm sewer system gain broader rights to enter private property for inspections and enforcement under the Virginia Erosion and Stormwater Management Act. (HB 2008 / SB 1093)
  • C-PACE Financing Expanded: Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing eligibility now includes multifamily buildings with five or more units and commercial condos, supporting broader clean energy upgrades. (HB 1819)
  • Several other laws related to Property Management, Condominiums, tax delinquency, and more were implemented.

Election Season in the Commonwealth 2025

  • All of the House of Delegates seats are up for election in 2025
  • Races for Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General will be decided.
  • Primary elections were held in June, and the General Election will be in November.
  • You are encouraged to vote and to sign up to participate in your community by being a poll worker in November.
 

On the National Scene

The National Association of REALTORS® lists five wins as a result of the Senate passage of sweeping tax reform legislation on July 1.

  • A permanent extension of lower individual tax rates
  • An enhanced and permanent qualified business income deduction
  • A temporary (5-year) quadrupling of state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap, beginning for 2025.
  • Protection for business SALT deductions and 1031 like-kind exchanges.
  • A permanent extension of the mortgage interest deduction.
